Thousands of volunteers and professionals, spread over the five
continents are marking World Oceans Day on 8 June, highlighting the
beauty and the fragility of marine ecosystems and the need to act right
now to ensure not only their survival, but also our own.
Each year, the World Ocean Day gathers together an increasing number of organisations united in the same cause – to preserve the beauty and the resources of the sea for future generations; they are inviting hundreds of thousands of the Blue Planet’s inhabitants to become "Citizens of the Sea".
This year again, for the 3rd edition and over several days around 8 June, volunteers and professionals will welcome parents and children and help them discover, love and protect the sea through artistic and scientific activities.
The World Ocean Network and The Ocean Project are coordinating the celebration of this day on the five continents and are working to achieve official UN recognition of the event by means of a petition open to the public.
With its honorary chairman Jean-Michel Cousteau, the World Ocean Network is implementing an international campaign to mobilise the public in favour of the sustainable use of the sea with the support of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Programme of Action. This campaign is being relayed in Europe by the 12 European members of the OCEANICS consortium with the support of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research.
Let’s become Citizens of the Ocean
A junior version of the World Ocean passport is being introduced this year to encourage everyone to become a "citizen of the ocean", whatever their age.
On 8 June, let’s celebrate World Ocean Day together!
