Creating an App for Reserve Management (ARM)

Project Title: Improving management effectiveness through technological advancement – Creating an App for Reserve Management (ARM) in Cousin Island Special Reserve
Funded by the Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT)
Cousin Island Special Reserve, an essential sanctuary for endangered species in the Seychelles, is adopting innovative solutions to boost its conservation efforts. In light of the changing requirements of the Nature Reserves and Conservancy Act and the challenges posed by limited resources, we are creating and implementing a custom-designed, user-friendly data management application.
The App for Reserve Management (ARM) aims to simplify data collection and analysis, facilitating real-time monitoring and informed decision-making. By moving from manual processes to a digital platform, we will significantly alleviate time and resource constraints, enabling more effective management of this vital habitat.
Key Features and Benefits:
- Tailor-Made Application: A custom application designed for Cousin Island to collect real-time data entry, management, and analysis, accessible via rugged tablets.
- Open source: The app is built on open-source software and represents a significant step forward in utilizing technology for environmental preservation.
- Enhanced Monitoring: GPS tracking, real-time data input, and centralized data storage for in-depth monitoring of species and ecosystem health.
- Efficient Resource Allocation: A decrease in manual data entry, saving hundreds of hours each year and optimizing resource use.
- Improved Decision-Making: Data-driven insights for effective habitat management, species conservation, and policy development.
- Capacity Building: Comprehensive training for Cousin Island staff to ensure effective use of the application.
- Future Expansion: Opportunities for replication and extension to other protected areas in the Seychelles, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Compliance: Enhances the ability to fulfil the new duties and responsibilities outlined in the Nature Reserves and Conservancy Act.
This project will have a direct positive impact on the various species inhabiting Cousin Island, particularly Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtles, endemic land birds and seabirds, as well as on the management team and staff of the reserve, and Nature Seychelles. Additionally, it will play a role in wider conservation initiatives in the Seychelles by showcasing how technology can enhance the management of protected areas.
Timeline: 18 months, with distinct phases dedicated to application development, testing, staff training, and field deployment, beginning in late 2024 and extending into early 2026.
