Saltwater Crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, were the largest land animals when humans first discovered the granitic Seychelles. This species is today found in Asia and Australasia and can reach 6.5 m in length. Caimans became extinct in Seychelles roughly 50 years after the country’s founding in 1770. In the aftermath of the extinction of this reptile, another land animal became the largest on the islands: the iconic Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Today Seychelles has about thirty species of reptiles including tortoises, marine turtles, terrapins, snakes and lizards.
