Electronic Bio-Seychelles: Resource launched for International Year of Biodiversity

A new online Library has been launched by Nature Seychelles as one of several new activities the organisation will initiate to mark 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. The new resource hosted on the organisation’s website contains a collection of scientific papers and publications relating to conservation and the environment in the Seychelles.

The purpose of the Library is to make essential information easily accessible to conservationists, students and the public. The Library is especially important for scholarly and other research and is meant to overcome the lack of readily available information for scholarship.

“It is difficult for people in Seychelles to have access to scientific papers so this is a facility we hope people, especially Seychellois students will use.” Says Nature Seychelles Chief Executive Nirmal Shah.

A number of well-known scientists who have conducted research in the Seychelles and have contributed to the Library have lauded this move.

“What a great resource!” Said Tony Diamond, Wildlife Ecology Professor at the University of New Brunswick.

The e-Library is divided into different sections covering Scientific papers, with over 100 papers now online with strict conditions for non-commercial use described; General Publications, which include the Zwazo; Species Action Plans; and National Documents. The Library is a continuously evolving resource as authors provide more papers and as other public domain documents become available or are uploaded.

The Library can be accessed via the “Library” link on the Nature Seychelles website A banner has also been placed on the website for visibility.
