The Global Ocean Science Report (GOSR) assesses for the first time the status and trends in ocean science capacity around the world. The Report offers a global record of who, how, and where ocean science is conducted: generating knowledge, helping to protect ocean health, and empowering society to support sustainable ocean management in the framework of the United Nations Agenda 2030. The Global Ocean Science Report identifies and quantifies the key elements of ocean science at the national, regional and global scales, including workforce, infrastructure and publications. This is the first collective attempt to systematically highlight opportunities as well as capacity gaps to advance international collaboration in ocean science and technology. This Report is a resource for scientist, academics, policy makers, and other stakeholders seeking to harness the potential of ocean science to address global challenges, the Report makes a case for increased funding in view of the ocean’s economic importance and other social and scientific challenges (e.g. the UN Sustainable Development Goals)

State indicators, e.g., mean size and trophic level of the fish assemblage, can provide important insights into the effects of fishing on ecosystems and the resource potential of the fishery. On coral reefs, few
studies have examined the relative effects of fishing and other drivers, such as habitat, on these indicators. In light of habitat heterogeneity and increasing habitat degradation, this lack of understanding limits the usefulness of indicators for monitoring the effect of fishery management actions.

Nash et al. Ecosphere 2016 The resilience of an ecosystem can be defined as its capacity to absorb disturbances while maintaining structure and function (Holling 1973). It has proved challenging to predict
ecosystem resilience because its loss may only be apparent when thresholds are reached and the system
moves to an alternate state (Bellwood et al. 2004).

Three fact sheets to communicate the economic and social importance of coral reefs at a country and regional level have been released. Data is provided for more than 50 coral reef countries in 3 regions. Each factsheet provides easy to read economic and social data for the three main ecosystems services provided by coral reefs: coastal protection, fishing, and tourism and highlights their importance in the various’ countries GDP. Readers will also find striking sentences that can be used in arguments to inform and convince decision makers.

This report, which was commissioned and financed by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM), is devoted to current and potential future measures to mitigate the impacts of marine plastic litter on the ocean environment.It is meant to be used as a background report for Swedish actors at the high-level UN Ocean Conference that will convene at the UN Headquarters in New York in June 2017.

Mauritius Declaration on Ocean Sciences from the Roundtable Discussion on Advancing Ocean Sciences in Africa 25-26 July 2016 in Port Louis, Mauritius Recognizing the emerging importance of the ocean to Africa, scientists from a dozen African nations met to discuss ways to grow the relevant scientific capacity and ensure that scientific knowledge is available to inform public understanding and policy. Both established and emerging scientists attended. Participants decided to create a network of African scientists (including both social and natural sciences) devoted to advancing ocean sciences in Africa. They crafted the following statement.

Measuring the health-related Sustainable Development Goals in 188 countries: a baseline analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

In September 2015, ODI published a global SDG scorecard, Projecting Progress: Reaching the SDGs by 2030.This report, modelled on that global scorecard, presents a more detailed analysis of projected progress for sub-Saharan Africa. It uses data collected during the MDG period and calculates progress forward to establish where we would be in 2030 if current trends continue.

Here we document and predict long-term reef responses to a major climateinduced coral bleaching event that caused unprecedented regionwide mortality of Indo-Pacific corals.

Pacific islands intimately connect land and sea. Rats, cats, and other invasive species quickly destroy these links, particularly by predating on native forest seeds, forest birds, sea birds, and other vital ecosystem
components. Effective management of invasive species is key to protect terrestrial and marine systems, supporting their function and increasing their resilience to change.
