BLUE ECONOMY Increasing Long term Benefits of the Sustainable Use of Marine Resources for Small Island Developing States and Coastal Least Developed Countries

This report was drafted by a working group of United Nations entities, the world Bank, and other stakeholders to suggest a common understanding of the blue economy; to highlight the importance of such an approach, particularly for small island developing states and coastal least developed countries; to identify some of the key challenges its adoption poses; and to suggest some broad next steps that are called for in order to ensure its implementation.

Climate Forecasting for Small Island Nations - 2016

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are often affected by weather extremes and climate change, including the increased severity of cyclones, storm surges, heavy rains, droughts, sea-level rise and ocean acidification. Investments in disaster risk reduction, including early warning systems and adaptation measures for critical sectors, are therefore critical for building resilient communities and facilitating sustainable development.

Convergence of health expenditure in Africa.pdf

To address the problem of underfunding of health systems in SSA the Abuja Declaration of 2001 set a target to allocate 15% of a country’s budget to public health expenditure. However there is no empirical evidence on whether SSA countries are converging or diverging from the target and whether there is significant effect of the Abuja instrument on other health expenditure indicators…

Published by Blue Solutions, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH GRID-Arendal, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment)

The Blue Solutions Initiative collates, documents and shares successful approaches, or “solutions”, addressing marine and coastal challenges. The sharing and exchanging of these solutions provides others with examples and lessons learned, and can inspire to adapt and replicate these achievements without “reinventing the wheel”, thereby accelerating action for sustaining healthy marine and coastal ecosystems. The Blue Solutions Initiative facilitates exchange around solutions through the marine and coastal solutions portal on the PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet platform (www.panorama.solutions/marinecoastal) and in face-to-face meetings such as workshops and trainings.
