The power of the press paid dividends for the cause of conservation this week as a mass-media outcry over a theft from the Roche Caiman Sanctuary led to a police tip-off, an arrest and the recovery of the stolen goods.
Seychellois expert on international task force
Dr. Nirmal Jivan Shah of Nature Seychelles has been appointed a member of a new international Task Force on Protected Areas. The Task Force is a joint initiative of the World Commission on Protected Areas and the Commission on Environmental Law.
Minor theft, major problem
The success of a three year € 200,000 conservation project has been left in the balance after the theft of 60 metres of standard issue green chain link fencing. The fence was cut out of the 700 metre boundary of the Nature Seychelles-managed Roche Caiman Sanctuary, a small fresh water wetland area, just two kilometres from Seychelles’ capital Victoria, which is nearing the end of a three year restoration project.
GEF offers NGO action lifeline
Seychelles’ environmental non-governmental organisations were reassured of future action-oriented funding last week at a meeting with representatives of the Global Environment Facility which is set to pump millions of dollars into Seychelles, some of it ear-marked for the NGO community.
Presidential thumbs-up for Wildlife Clubs
A good project, hard work and youthful enthusiasm paid off for the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles at last week’s National Agriculture-Horticulture Show, when Seychelles' head of state President James Michel and his party of officials stopped by to take a look at their Heritage Gardens display.
