A recently approved project  in the Seychelles will help in the demarcation of Marine Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in the country. Nature Seychelles has signed a grant agreement to carry out activities that will lead to the creation of Marine IBAs as part of a Global Environment Facility (GEF) financed project, "Strengthening Seychelles Protected Area System through NGO Management Modalities" - being implemented by the Seychelles Ministry of Home Affairs, Environment and Transport with support from UNDP.

A book that promotes sustainable living in Seychelles through growing and consuming food locally was launched by Nature Seychelles last week. The roving Ambassador for Women's and Children's Affairs Mrs. Marie Pierre Lloyd launched the book called Grow and Eat Your Own Food. The launch focused on the twin themes of agriculture and gender as drivers for sustainability. It is the crux of the book, Nature Seychelles' Chief Executive Nirmal Shah said.

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) have announced the Seventh WIOMSA Scientific Symposium that will be held in Mombasa, Kenya in October 2011 and a call for abstracts has been sent out.

 

“In our country effective conservation is dependent on good infrastructure and equipment. It’s not really the sexy part of conservation, but without good IT equipment, vehicles, boats, information centers, accommodation, roads, supply of potable water and electricity and so forth it would be very difficult to undertake world class conservation action,” says Nirmal Shah, Nature Seychelles Chief Executive.
